1st Post - General Motors advanced tech window

Below is a video I found on website www.trendhunter.com/trends/interactive-car-windows

The video is related to emerging or future trends within Digital Media sector. The video is about having animated auto windows in the back seats of cars to provide entertainment for back seat passengers. In the article below on the site stated that "Psychological studies have shown that car passengers often feel disconnected from their environment.." so having an interactive car window could change your back seat journey forever.

A company called General Motors (GM)(www.gm.com) who are a Human Machine Interface Research company asked a group of students from Bezalel Academy of Art and Design in Israel to come up with ideas to create new experiences for back seat passengers. What they came up with was "The Windows Of Opportunity Project". It consisted of the following features:

1. Spindow - which allows the user to change the view of their outside environment to any image around the world e.g instead of looking at Cork City you could change the view so your looking at New York City.

2. Fogged Drawing Board - You can draw pictures on the window using colour much like when drawing on fogfged up windows has the same effect.

3. Otto - is like a travel buddy to moves along side you as the car moves the faster the car goes the faster he flies. Responds to the environment outside of the car and can be controlled by the user

4. Pond - it acts much like a social network you can write a message on the window and flip it aroiund so people outside the car can read it and it also allows you to share music.

  1. How does it share music ? Is it just through text, or with visuals or ? Looks cool though, any information on how it reacts with people who get motion sickness ? (or maybe i should say how they react to it :P )

  2. It acts like a social network when it comes to sharing music not sure how developed it is in terms of how it actually portrayed with text or visuals. Motion sickness?? Dont know maybe they could have an in car anti soiling guide and show them how to get sick efficiently without cause mess :) haha!!

  3. Cool idea, the demo applications look like they might get boring pretty quick but I'm sure they could do loads more with this technology, after all we are only starting to see augmented reality get integrated into everyday devices so its only going to get better.

  4. Even things like augmented reality, this seems to be an oversized touchscreen, so any tablet or mobile app would seem to be directly portable to this interface ?

Ha love the anti soiling guide idea

  6. This GM project is really impressive! Somehow reminds me of that VisitNorway ad: http://vimeo.com/31475670 it's not interactive though.

Using augmented reality is most definitely a good approach for an idea for the Fun Theory Project.

  7. I don't want to simply repeat the sentiments of others who have already commented but I have one observation... this technology could be a distraction for other drivers who are driving alongside this car (on a dual carriageway let's say). THe visuals would want to be visible only to the passengers of the car itself and not anyone else.
